Plein Aire, painting in the ourdoors, is always a joy and a challenge. The weather and the changing conditions add to thepainting fun!

Saturday morning was cloudy and a bit misty when I set out for Horseshoe Pond in the National Park. I set up my easel and got to work with only the bullfrogs as company. The fallen trees across the pond seemed like the perfect subject matter for the day.

I used an 8x10 canvas and focused on detail in the trees and reflections in the water.

This painting is part of the 2016 Plein Air competition in Peninsula.

Brandywine Falls

For the 6th Annual Plein Air Peninsula I started at the magnificent Brandywine Falls. The weather was beautiful. A steady stream of hikers kept me company while I worked on this 11x14 piece.

Hey!hay!

This painting was done at the Trapp Family Farm. The sunlight was hitting the hay and illuminating it and the contrast with the dark shadows under the wagon was something I knew I had to paint.

I am fortunate enough to live near the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. There are an endless number of sites to paint year round in the park. I will admit that I usually paint outdoors in good weather; I have not achieved the rank of Plein Air Warrior.

I was asked to do an interview with WKSU radio's vivian Goodman on plein aire painting in the National Park. This  painting "Around the Bend" was done during the interview which can be heard on the WKSU website here
